Is Canada a Christian Nation?

Is Canada a Christian Nation?

It was a mere one hundred and fifty years ago — in the year 1867 — that Canada first became a nation.  During the country’s early and formative years the prevailing views on morality were based upon and drawn from the Holy Bible and served as the primary influence in the spheres of education, politics, religion. And this is the reason for Canada's stability and prosperity in the past: it began as a nation founded upon Christian principles.  Unfortunately, our country has moved further and further from this good beginning and today Canada can no longer be considered a Christian nation.  Marriage, the family unit, the sanctity of life, and the Christian faith itself are being trampled underfoot.  This country is quickly removing whatever Christian values remain.  Canadian culture is rejecting God and, as a result, we cannot expect continued prosperity unless it restores Biblical principles.
If a person jumped back in time they would notice some surprising differences in the Canadian society of the past and the Canada of the present twenty-first century.  Education, politics, religion and lifestyle looked much different back then, and in many ways, were much better.  For example, only a few decades ago in the public schools, both students and staff paused to hear the Lord’s prayer recited at the beginning of the day as it was broadcast throughout the school. Now, however, prayer to the God of the Bible has been thrown out of the public schools—it is not allowed at all! Or consider the titles now used for the two week break from school that students enjoy during the end of December: it used to be referred to as the ‘Christmas holidays’ but now it has been renamed the ‘winter holidays’ or 'winter break' so as to remove any reference to the Christ of Christianity whose birth this season has historically celebrated. God may not be prayed to in public, Christmas has been renamed, and even further, evolution is taught and creation has become a myth. God has been pushed out of the schools!  The results are horrifying – schools have become godless places!  Violence, drugs, sex, alcohol abuse, and shootings have become common place in our schools and in our society. This is the result of throwing the Bible and its values out of the public schools and out of the public life of our nation.

Canadian laws have also undergone much change for the worse.  A few decades ago the country's laws reflected Christian values in the areas of Sabbath day observance, marriage fidelity, and the sanctity of life.  A few decades ago stores were not even allowed to be open for business on Sunday, but the government removed this law about twenty years ago and now almost every store is open on Sundays. The Lord’s day is not honoured we pay the price for not obeying God's command to rest one day a week: people are overworked, over-tired and highly stressed. Marriage laws have also undergone much change.  Marriage was for life; divorce was the exception.  Now marriage is often viewed as a temporary contract that can be ended any time; divorce is the norm.  Marriage meant one man and one woman; any other form of sexual union was considered shameful.  Now homosexuality is openly and unashamedly promoted as an alternative lifestyle.  In recent years the government has legalized this abomination.  This is detestable in God’s eyes!

Or consider the issue of abortion. In 1869 the government ruled that abortion was illegal and perpetrators were to be punished by life imprisonment. Human life was valued and protected from conception onwards until natural death.  However, in 1988 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down Canada’s abortion law and legalized the killing of unborn babies.  The government now permits the murder of the unborn! And things get worse. There is now a strong push to allow euthanasia, the killing of the elderly, the handicapped, and those whose lives are deemed not worth living. We can kill those who are not yet born. And soon we will be able to kill those who have been born but who no longer wish to live. Divorce, homosexuality, abortion, and euthanasia are destroying the family unit, and these crimes continue with the government’s blessing! Many people do not consider God’s curse which comes alongside upholding such wickedness.

Today, the lifestyle of most people in Canada does not reflect Christian values.  People live for themselves and abide by their own law rather than by God’s Word.  On Sundays the churches are empty and the shopping malls are full.  People don’t want children; marriage is taboo; homosexuality is fine; teens are involved with drugs, sex and alcohol.  Can we call this Christian?

In Canada’s formative years, Christian churches dotted the landscape.  As the government gave out land grants, it even set aside a piece of land in each area for a church. Today, new religions are popping up all around us.  Hindu temples, Sikh temples and Muslim mosques are appearing.  Christian churches are disappearing.

What is happening in Canada?  The answer is clear and the results are ugly: God is being pushed away and evil is running rampant.  God has been removed from the schools of the nation.  God has been removed from the laws of the nation.  God has been removed from the people of the nation.  Churches are disappearing, all religions are welcome – except, perhaps, Christianity.  Canada is rejecting its Christian foundations and is rejecting God.

In its beginnings, Canada prospered because of God’s blessing.  This nation was blessed because it followed Biblical principles.  As Canada rejects these Christian foundations, it becomes godless and no longer blessed by God.  We see godlessness abounding: theft, murder, rape, drugs, drunkenness, debt, suicide, the list goes on.  Unless Canada turns back to God and obeys His Word as given in the Holy Bible, it will be destroyed.  Let us repent and return to God!
